physical tests on the 26th at Lincoln.

physical tests on the 26th at Lincoln.

Postby Richard1983 » 17 May 2012, 15:24

I have my physical (Job related) tests at Lincoln HQ on sat the 26th. I'm looking forward to it but nervous about it too, especially the ladder lift and enclosed space test. Any advice that you can give please? Iv been going to the gym and can do the shoulder press with 70lb doing reps of 12 and did 6 reps Tuesday, is that ok for the ladder lift? Also been doing 30 min cardio runs on the treadmill at levels 7 and 8. Thought this will help with my medical on Thursday and the equipmnet carry. Any afvice appreciated :smileaa:

Dont get too worried about the ladder lift, you'll be able to do it with no training at all, im sure my nan could do it!

Enclosed space, dont try and remember any of the route, just feel everything and follow your hands.. There's a bit that feels like a dead end but it's actually a bit you have to get low and go under..

First run through is with vision, then they'll cover the ba mask up and you'll do it again in reverse.

Casualty drag is easy, they guide you so just take some nice big paces.

Killer is the equipment carry, just pace yourself, it's about stamina not pace.

I did the tests with no prior training, no gym etc and was fine.

All the best mate,

if you can do that sort of work out at the gym it wont be any problem for you. I did loads of training at the gym before i had mine and i did a practice equipment carry but well over done it. This worked out quite well because it made the real thing feel much easier.

Let us know how its goes.

Hi Richard

To be honest most people don't have a problem with the job related tests. Especially if youre prepared for it as you seem to be and being of a standard fitness level.
There will be no pressure and you should enjoy your day. No need to get nervous about it at all. There is nothing there to catch you out. You maybe puffing abit at the end of the equipment carry because it is timed and you won't know how you're doing until the end so naturally you will push yourself to the max. But you will get a bottle of water as a reward.
Everything Kevin said applies just be relaxed about it, I would think you will start off with the Chester step test so you need to be relaxed or you will give a false reading (white coat syndrome) only goes to level 3 so it's not difficult to do.

Good luck.

I used to delivery the tests and what I would say is listen to the instructions given its amazing how many people don't follow instruction, the test themselves like others have said are not that difficult even if your not super fit, just try and keep a clear head and good luck.

Ill be there with you Richard. The only thing that concerns me a little is the Chester step test as I know little about it.

Do you find out on the day if you have been successful with the tests?

Hi mate, the Chester step test is a test to see what level of fitness your at. You have to step up and down on a step to a cd playing the pace and gets faster each level while your heart rate gets monitor, the test stops once you have reached your maxim heart rate. Not sure what level we need to get to tho mate to pass. What station you applying for mate? Not sure if we find out on the day or not :smileaa:

Im going for Grantham.

I know the basics of the test but the grey area is how they score it. From what I have heard lincs FRS only go to level 3..... Does that mean that if you complete level 3 and your still under 80% of max heart rate you have passed?

Other than that grey are the only other thing that may cause problems is the rat run. Not due to claustrophobia but just due to running out of time or losing direction.

Cool, im applying for Stamford.

Ah ok, I've also heard it only goes to level 3 too but can't say how we pass it tho mate. I had my medical yesterday and the doctor said I shouldn't have a problem with it going on my medical tests results, but will just have to see. I'm just trying not to get too nervous about it as heart rate will be high before even starting. I'm also a bit nervous about the enclosed space for the same reasons.

With the nurse you do Blood pressure, urine sample for drugs test, hearing test in a sound booth, eye sight test including colour blindness test, height and weight taken then they calculate your BMI. Lung function test to test your lung capacity etc. Then at the end you see the doctor who listens to your heart, looks in your eyes and ears and just gets you to do some easy tests like hop on each leg etc. they was really friendly there mate.

You really have nothing to worry about on the rat run. Most people say when they come out of it how much easier it was then they thought. Again it's all about bring relaxed.

The step test is measured on your heart rate over the 3 levels and is worked out on a computer program or you can do it on a graph manualy. So long as you score more than 42 it will be a pass. Usually if your increase is around 10 beats a min increase between levels it's about right. That will give you a rough (ish) idea to go on whilst your doing the test.

And yes you will find out weather you pass you job related tests on the day.

Good luck. See you there. ;)
