Hi Guys,

just wonderd if there was anyone else struggling to pass the chester step test? i failed my first test and had a mock one last week, i'm on track and have brought myself a heart rate monitor, i do the step test myself every day at home using a crate, the step test audio and my heart rate monitor, i have passed it 5 days in a row at home but today when i did it i failed, could this be due to the red bull i had this morning and lucozade this afternoon? i have the actual test again in a couple of weeks, ive been doing the step test to atleast the end of level four and then 20 mins on the excercise bike, i do the bike 3 times a week and the step test every day. Any advice on this would be appreciated as the step test is the only thing delaying me being put on the september course.

Thanks in advance

Leon  :winky:

Hi Leon,
I've banged on about the step test and what a crock of s**t it is before on here. Ask them if you can take a bleep test. From what you say your fitness levels are good so that may be a better option. Three out of four of us failed the step and the instructor let us try the bleep test as he admitted himself that he had no faith in the step test. Also, I'd steer well clear of Red Bull and Lucozade, they'll definitely raise your heart rate and as far as energy drinks go, I think they're rubbish. Just my opinion though. You may have been a bit anxious too so try to relax as you're waiting to take the test. Best of British to you, let us know how the next test goes.

Dont eat much in the 2 or 3 hours before the test as having a full stomach will divert blood to your digestion and raise your heart rate to compensate. Keep clear of Red Bull, Lucozade or similar and avoid tea and coffee on the day of the test but do drink plenty of water. Caffeine, other stimulants or dehydration can lead to an escalated heart rate on the step test. Having even a mild cold will also affect your performance.
