Postby nuttyarab » 08 Jan 2012, 23:46

I have got my test date, now im not sure but from what I can gather I will taking the written exam and the physical on the same day, is this normal?

Anyway the one test im really worried about is the hose test, we have 11 mins to role out 5 hoses, go back put them over our shoulder walk back to the end and role it up correctly, it all has to be done to perfection otherwise we lose points, has anyone get any tips or even video clips to help me out

biggest tip is to go down to your station and ask to use a 70mm hose length and get practising! its not that easy and id ask to borrow someones uniform if they will let you!!

yes if you can get come hands on practice like Hockers says that will be best, however remember everything will explained to you and I would think they will let you have a few goes at running it out on your physical before commencing the test.

Hi,
Make sure that when you roll out the hose you get it up high, pull it tight when finished running it out. When rolling it up make sure it's pulled tight, all kinks are out. When you start to roll it up make sure that its tight on the female coupling otherwise youll end up with a wallnut whip. If its starts to go out of shape, stop and pat the sides to get it back in line.

Good luck! :winky:

Hose running will really take it out of you.

During initial training we did it 3 times throughout the course to see people's times decrease.

I must admit, i was pretty slow on the first but once you've got the technique and stamina you'll be fine.

It's a killer, i used to dread the day lol

PS. Putting it over your shoulder is under-running, usually to get all the water out the length. We could never decide if it's better to roll out, under-run, job back, roll up or roll out, jog back, under-run and roll up.

You have to be very careful when doing anything on station before you've started the course as you probably won't be insured just a word of warning.

Yes practise, also doing lots of pushups, handstands etc improving strength and flexability really helps. Start of my course last june i could do 6 lengths in 10.40, now i can do 6 in 7min 14sec without much effort. Most brigades require you to do 6 lengths in under 8mins so just keep ontop of it.
